KAILUA-KONA— Sunday’s Hookena Beach Road fire is considered suspicious, firefighters said, but was for the most part under control as of Monday.
The South Kona fire joins the growing number of around a dozen suspicious fires across West Hawaii in recent weeks. The fires have consumed anywhere from a few square yards to hundreds of acres.
The Hookena Beach Road fire is being monitored by the ranch that owns the property. They also provided one of the two bulldozers that cut the firebreak.
The Lako Street fire, which started on Thursday, continues to flare up, and a night watch remains in place, according to the department.
